Mornings

The song of the morning lark
And I awake.
For a moment you are still here
But as I open my eyes
I remember.
And the song of the lark no longer cheers me
For you are gone.
I long for sleep to consume me
But it never comes
The birds still sing and I want to cry.
But that I mustn’t do
For once I start I can never stop
And the sadness will be too great.
The morning sun rises
And I must banish you from my mind.
So once again I can face the day.
